Playing
drums in the K.B.Express was a rather wild but musically adventurous
experience. Kevin Borich is a full on guitar player and singer,
not forgetting Harry Brus on bass guitar who is one of the finest
and dedicated Australian musicians and passionate for great feel
playing.
Harry now plays
bass alongside Mark Kennedy who isn't exactly a slouch when it
comes to playing the drums. They form a very formidable rhythm
section with Renee Geyer who all Australians should be proud of, having
a voice as good as any of the American soul -blues singers.
When the Australian
music scene was very young back in the sixties and I was playing
drums with the Chain that recorded the 1st. Chain L.P. "Chain
Live", it was nothing unusual to be playing at a gig and
look around to see Mark Kennedy setting up his drums and then
Kevin Murphy from Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs setting up his
drums too. Boy there sure were some great drum solos played in
Sydney and Melbourne when we had 3 drummers playing at once.
Enter a young
18 year old chap who use to help us with the gear who kept asking
Chain if he could be their manager. He seemed like a rather bright
young lad who went under the name of Michael Gudinski and he
formed a record label and called it Mushroom Records...things got busy.
When Barry Sullivan
(big goose) left Chain it took 5 years to find someone good enough
to replace him, enter Dirk Dubois who did just that. Dirk is
a fine bass player who Chain were very lucky to find and owe
a lot to, with his professionalism, dedication and reliability,
not forgetting his good looks. Dirk is also a fine guitar player
and works in a duo called "The Vernons" with an amazingly
beautiful vocalist, Lil' Fi from Bundaberg in Queensland. This
lass not only is gorgeous looking but has an even better voice
from Rock to Blues to gospel to jazz, check her and Dirk out

You should also
visit Jeff Lang, the meanest guitarist from Geelong, and drop in on Kirk Lorange, another slide player and the
creator of this web site. (Hi folks)
Of course all
the drummers would go to get new sticks at Billy
Hydes
in Melbourne, the most popular drummer's store in Melbourne. When
in Brisbane the drummers love Col Gillies
Drum Store,
who is so much like the old personal service we used to get in
Melbourne and a real drummer also.
Another great
store for the drummers in Brisbane, whether residing or touring
is DrumWorx, situated in the Valley, Neil always takes good
care.
In the suburbs
is a store called Music Express run by a lovely chap called Tony
who sold me my Gretsch Drums back in 1967 and were used on hundreds
of recordings and I still use them now. Talk about quality of
craftmanship. I bought them on hire purchase and paid them off
when I was in the original 'Chain' They are the same drums on
the cover of my book 'Text of Music Phrase', a book I am very
proud of because it was meant to help drummers who are sincere
about music and I guess who really love music. Tony at Music
Express can be contacted by emailing mexpress@one.net.au
As far as the
"Text of Music Phrase" goes, it is all around the World
now, thanks to people like Immedia. Another great organised
book place is BookData and Bookfind-online.
I must thank
Berklee College of Music in Boston for the inspiration
they install into you to get moving with your musical ideas,
Best school in the world for the art of music that you can feel
They have some incredible writers there and their library is
seen to believe.
Of course every
country must have a National Library, which in my country have
a copy of my book and they can be located at www.nla.gov.au A very appreciative
staff who thank you for being original.
Information Australia is a great source of information regarding
books.
We musn't forget
all the great music webrings around the world and I mustn't forget
to thank Mrs. Ellington for Duke Ellington; Mrs. Davis for Miles
Davis and Mrs. Coltrane for John Coltrane.
Yours Sincerely,
Barry Harvey
