From Basics to Complexity
through Simplicity
As with any other skill, becoming a great
musician is the result of practice, dedication and self discipline.
The other vital ingredient is fluency with the language of music.
The majority of drum instruction books available in the world
today are either filled with complicated exercises (with no instruction
on how to go about reading them), or they're filled with pictures
of famous drummers behind gigantic drum sets with a smattering
of music to play. Barry Harvey's book goes right back to the
basics, introducing the reader to the fundamentals of sight reading
and builds from that solid foundation. All exercises are accompanied
by an explanatory text.
There must be technique in creative playing,
as we all know, and this is also true for reading and writing
music. Chapter Two introduces the player to more complexity,
allowing the lessons of Chapter One to be applied. Again, all
exercises are accompanied by a 'how to' text. The player is then
shown how the exercises relate to contemporary music, in eighteen
different standard styles, with fully written parts for each.
All have written bass parts in a separate book 'The Bass Players
Text of Phrasing'.
Chapter Four's reading and playing is very
adventurous and explores the more un-orthodox note groups - how
to read them in their basic odd time signature and how to then
turn them around and play the un-orthodox types in a standard
song form. This shows the musician that there are really no barriers
in music styles but just an adjustment of perspective and importantly
- attitude towards the art of creativity.
- Other topics include:
Hand techniques - How to play them and
how to understand them from a notation point of view as well
as the more traditional rudimental exercise slant, giving the
player the skills to communicate easily with other musicians.
Three way coordination.
Four way coordination.
This Bible of Drumming - a 240 page handwritten
volume - is a must for any player serious about being in the
running. To be a great musician is be a confident musician, in
technique and reading / writing ability. Text of Music Phrase
delivers both.
